Specialty flooring is a category of commercial flooring for buildings or rooms with specific requirements for building codes, health and safety standards and product development standards. Many public buildings, health care offices and institutions, manufacturing properties and offices with computer rooms have special requirements for the flooring.

Static Reducing Tiles - Specialty products are available such as static dissipative tiles. These tiles are used in computer manufacturing facilities and other clean rooms.

Slip Resistant Flooring - Another type of specialty vinyl flooring are slip resistant flooring. These products have corundum imbedded in the wear layer.  Altro is one of the most recognized manufacturers or slip resistant products. This type of flooring is often recommended for ramps, wet areas in grocery stores, commercial kitchens and pharmaceutical laboratories.

Linoleum is a type of vinyl flooring,  resilient flooring and green flooring solution.

Linoleum has been around for many years and is manufactured much the same way it was 50 years ago. Linoleum is a floor covering made from linseed oil in combination with wood flour or cork dust over canvas. Colorants are added to make various designs.

Resilient Linoleum -  Linoleum is known for its durability, stability and natural resistance to bacterial growth.

Green Linoleum - This natural product is a favorite of interior designers because it is one of the most “green” flooring products available today.

The largest manufacturers of linoleum include Tarkett, Armstrong and Forbo. Linoleum is often incorrectly used to describe vinyl flooring.

Sheet vinyl flooring is commonly known as “SV”.  This type of commercial vinyl flooring product received it’s name because it is available in “sheets”, ie. it is available in rolls of material. Most often this product is available in either 6 foot wide rolls or 2 meter wide rolls.

Common applications for sheet vinyl flooring are operating rooms in hospitals, patient rooms, soiled utility rooms, and bathrooms.

Decorative Uses of Sheet Vinyl - SV products can be made in layers like a sandwich or monolithically. The products made in layers usually have a urethane wear layer, printed film layer, fiberglass for stability and secondary backing. The film layer can be just about any visual. Popular today are faux wood grains, ceramic pictures or natural products like stones, grass or leaves.

Seem-less Applications of SV - Seem-less floors are very desirable in laboratory settings or in hospital operating rooms. Sheet vinyl flooring can be both heat welded and flash coved. Heat welding is a process where the seems of the sheet vinyl can be routed out and filled in with a bead of vinyl material that is melted into the routed out seem.

Flash coving is also called integral base. The vinyl floor is continued up the wall and capped with a vinyl molding or cove cap.

Manufacturers of sheet vinyl include but are not limited to Armstrong, Johnsonite, Mannington, Toli and Tarkett.

Vinyl Composite Tile - VCT

The first type of vinyl composition tile was originally called vinyl asbestos tile or VAT. This material is no longer manufactured in the United States because of the asbestos contained in the product.

The product is a combination of vinyl and clay fillers and is most often sold in 12 x 12 squares. Standard VCT has a relatively low quantity of Vinyl content in it and therefore has a low overall cost. The products with higher amounts of Vinyl content will be more expensive. The advantage of a higher vinyl content is greater indentation resistance, scratch resistance and wider selection of styles and colors. The largest manufacturers of VCT are Armstrong, Azrock, Congoleum, and Mannington.

There are many types of vinyl flooring available in the commercial resilient flooring market today. The two main types of vinyl flooring are Vinyl Composite Tile (VCT) and Sheet Vinyl flooring (SV). Linoleum is one of the most common resilient flooring and can be considered one of the most “green” vinyl flooring products. However there are a wide range of Specialty Vinyl Flooring Products - the term “specialty” is used to describe the features of the products required for different flooring applications.
